This course provides an introduction to the Orton-Gillingham method of instruction:  a multi-sensory, sequentially organized, cumulative method of teaching reading, spelling and handwriting to students of all ages.  The National Reading Panel has recognized the Orton-Gillingham method as one that will improve reading achievement for all students, and particularly those who have been unsuccessful with traditional reading instruction.

 

This course will include: 

 Familiarization with assessment tools

 Sequential progression through the structure of the English language:

´ Phonological awareness       ´ Phonology        ´Morphology    ´ Six basic syllable types    ´ Syllable division rules

 

 Explicit multi-sensory decoding/reading and encoding/spelling instruction

 Lesson Planning

 Handwriting

 Familiarization with appropriate, current materials options

 

            Appropriate for both professional educators and interested parents.  Many districts offer

professional development credit for this course; so ask your school administrator.  The

International Dyslexia Association will verify attendance for 15 instructional hours.
