Long Island Talking Book Library (LITBL) is a free library service for individuals who cannot hold, handle or see well enough to use regular print books. LITBL is a subregional library of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), the division of the Library of Congress that produces books and magazines in braille and recorded media for people with visual or physical disabilities.
LITBL lends professionally recorded books and magazines (and the special equipment needed to play them) to eligible residents on Long Island. Materials are sent to borrowers and returned by postage-free mail. LITBL currently serves about 4,000 readers, and lends over 100,000 talking books a year.
This program is made possible through the support of the Suffolk Cooperative Library System and the Nassau Library System, in an effort to ensure accessible library services to people with disabilities throughout Long Island.
